Sales of caravans in the UK has increased by around a fifth, as Brits are eschewing foreign holidays during the pandemic in favour of domestic holidays.

iNews reports that caravan trader Robinsons Caravans, a 54-year industry veteran, reported a 20 per cent increase in people buying their first caravans, which now accounts for 35 per cent of company sales. The firm also said there was a 10 per cent increase in customers aged under 40.

According to Robinsons, new caravan sales increased by 47 per cent in the year to 4 June, compared to the previous year, and used caravan sales were boosted by 65 per cent.

A spokesperson for the company said that first-time caravan buyers were purchasing high-end caravans, spending on average over £30,000, showing how much people are investing long-term in UK staycations.

Research from earlier in the year by MBH revealed that almost one in ten people (9 per cent) planned on taking a UK caravan holiday for the first time in 2021, which is three times the number of people who had their first UK caravan holiday in 2020.

“We are enjoying record growth, and it is very encouraging to see so many people buying caravans for the first time,” said Jarrod Clay, managing director of Robinsons Caravans.

“Our industry’s largest customer group is those people aged 55 and over – they are at a time in their lives where the children have grown up and they have more disposable income available. Whilst this still remains the largest age group, we are seeing a huge increase in people aged under 40 buying their first caravans.”
